Daily Bandwidth Usage Over 1 GB ?

Few months ago, I installed the BitMeter II applications to monitor the bandwidth usage of my laptop. You should install it too. It’s freeware and packed with useful features, including bandwidth limit reminder (should you need one ), and so far I did not feel any performance penalties.

It’s only today that I found this tool also records the monthly bandwidth usage, and quite surprising it is .

Notes:

I spend more than half of my days at the university, on that time usually the laptop is turned off.
The last week of December, my internet connection was cut for a little bit more than a month until January.

What did I do with roughly an average of 1 GB worth of traffic per day?

Let’s summarize it here:

Torrents. Must be . I am now following these TV series: 24, Heroes, Desperate Housewives, Lost (this one is going worse and worse , hence the name is lost ), House, CSI, CSI NY, American Idol (I tracked them through EZTV Efnet). Then football related torrents, BBC’s Match of The Day, and several football matches, highlights, etc. (released by fabulous guys at MaXxed Football Forums). Then very seldomly also full movies (search for ‘axxo’ to get high quality releases). Woah.. I watched too much movies Should’ve reduce it a little bit.
Online TV streaming, weekends are football times and a lot of live broadcast can be followed on TV. For the schedule (and also guidance on which program to use), I usually use myp2p.eu. Typically for two hours worth of streaming, it would take 1 GB download and 1,5GB upload bandwidth.
Casual web browsing, chat. Compared to the previous two, the portion used for this should be insignificant .

The connection we used is Tepco Hikari Home Plan on DTI (I don’t really understand the relation between the Tepco that provides the FTTH service and the DTI that seems to be the ISP, or maybe I am just totally misled here ). “We”, because this connection is shared with 6 people living in our boarding house.

Conclusion: I should have spent less on downloading movies, etc. Should have use my time for better purposes, such as my research
